A statement released on Monday by the Greek Olympic Committee has announced that the traditional torch lighting ceremony ahead of Tokyo 2020 will not take place in front of a massive crowd, similar to events that have happened in the past.
Prior to the Olympic Games beginning thousands of people usually gather to witness the official torch lighting ceremony which marks the beginning of the countdown to the official Olympic Games.
This year’s ceremony however will not resemble those of the past. The Greek Olympic Committee has stated that there will be “only 100 accredited guests from the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee” that will attend the event on Thursday at the site of ancient Olympia.
After the event the torch will travel around Greece for 7 days and thereafter will be taken to Japan where the games will be held.
