Due to the coronavirus pandemic, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has been cancelled for the first time in 50 years.
The comic book-inspired event which was meant to take place from July 23rd through July 26th 2020 will now do so from July 22nd through July 25 in 2021.
Comic-Con attendees that had already made their payments and reservations in advance have not been left in the cold. According to the organizers, everyone that had made a hotel reservation through San Diego Comic-Con’s partner onPeak will receive a refund of their deposits.
Furthermore, everyone that had paid for their Comic-Con badge will be eligible for a refund or to secure a badge for the next Comic-Con event in 2021.
In the statement disclosing the decision, the event organizers shared, “Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year,” hence the cancellation of the popular event.
San Diego Comic-Con usually attracts upwards of 100,000 people to the City. In recent years the event has also become a great marketing tool for TV shows and upcoming movies given its extensive reach. However, given that movie releases are being postponed indefinitely this year’s event wouldn’t have had the same impact as previous Comic-Con events.
“Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision,” David Glanzer, the spokesman for the organization, said in a statement.
“We eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy.”
