Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman, Disagrees With TikTok’s Invasion Of User Privacy

29 February 2020

It’s fair to say that Reddit Co-founder and CEO, Steve Huffman, is not a massive supporter of TikTok’s use of fingerprinting to track devices.

In a discussion at the Social 2030 venture capital conference this week Huffman referred to TikTok as a “parasitic” app.

His perspective came from having read an account by the researcher Matthias Eberl on Rufposten, regarding TikTok tracking their user’s audio and browser.

The Reddit CEO shared that feels unsettled by the fact that TikTok tracks which of their users are watching and sharing a video on both the app and on the web.

At the conference Huffman complained about the lip singing app stating, “I look at that app as so fundamentally parasitic, that it’s always listening, the fingerprinting technology they use is truly terrifying, and I could not bring myself to install an app like that on my phone.”

The TikTok app doesn’t require that its tracking system be active in order for the app to operate without any glitches.

However, in a statement the company responded by stating that the system is solely meant to ensure that malicious browser behaviour identified and dealt with.
