After Bill Gates made a pledge to donate millions towards tackling the coronavirus epidemic, China’s President, Xi Jingping, has sent him a personal letter expressing his gratitude.
The President’s letter wrote, “I deeply appreciate the act of generosity of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and your letter of solidarity to the Chinese people at such an important moment.”
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation committed $100 million towards the global fight against the disease earlier in the month.
The purpose of the donation was to back the efforts of those working towards strengthening detection, isolation as well as ensuring the proper treatment of patients suffering from the disease.
Provinces such as Hubei are currently in a critical state and have been on lock down since December. Hubei is where the first case of the disease was reported.
The foundation said it would direct US$20 million to organisations like the World Health Organisation, the US Centres for Disease Control and Protection, the National Health Commission of China and the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
The coronavirus, also referred to as the Covid-19 disease, has already led to the deaths of over 2340 people solely in China. A report showed that on Saturday there were 400 more new cases.
Globally there have been 76,000 cases reported concerning the virus in 25 countries.
